SUMMARY:October Engagement - Antebellum U.S. Congress - Virtual Engagement
 via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Dr. Rachel Shelden presents on the Antebellum U.S. C
ongress.&nbsp\; Please note that this meeting is being arranged for a Zoom
virtual presentation.&nbsp\;\nThe 1850s might have featured some of the m
ost famous and violent arguments in American history\, but in Washington\,
congressmen entered a social and political atmosphere that bred a sense o
f community and brotherhood. Ultimately\, that atmosphere created a "Washi
ngton bubble" that left many congressmen unprepared for secession and war
in 1861.\nDr. Shelden is an Associate Professor of American History at Pen
n State University\, specializing in the long Civil War Era\, from the Jac
ksonian Period through Reconstruction.&nbsp\; She is also the Director of
the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center at Penn State.&nbsp\; Dr.
Shelden's research and teaching interests include slavery and abolition\,
the Civil War\, the U.S. South\, and political and constitutional history
.&nbsp\; She is&nbsp\; the author of Washington Brotherhood: Politics\, So
cial Life\, &amp\; the Coming of the Civil War&nbsp\;(University of North
Carolina Press\, 2013)\, which received honorable mention for the Wiley-Si
lver Prize for the best first book on the American Civil War and was a sel
ection of the History Book Club.&nbsp\; She is co-editor\, with Gary Galla
gher\, of&nbsp\;A Political Nation: New Directions in Mid-Nineteenth-Centu
ry American Political History (University of Virginia Press\, 2012).&nbsp\
; &nbsp\;Her current project explores the political culture of the U.S. Su
